David and Shauna Katcsma
David and Shauna Katcsma of Dauphin, Manitoba, have dedicated much of their lives to preserving and promoting Ukrainian heritage and culture.
David’s passion for Ukrainian culture began early in his teaching career. In 1974, while teaching in Teulon, Manitoba, he founded and instructed the Veselka Ukrainian Dance Club, inspiring young dancers to embrace their cultural roots. After David and Shauna were married in 1982, Shauna developed a deep appreciation for Ukrainian culture and dance. In 2006, she joined the Sche Raz Ukrainian Dance Group, where she continues to perform today.
Their commitment to Ukrainian heritage led them both to become active volunteers with the Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival. Shauna joined the Festival Board of Directors in 2004, followed by David in 2005. In 2006, Shauna accepted the role of Executive Assistant, serving in that position until 2016. Her dedication and passion for Ukrainian culture were evident in every aspect of her work.
David was elected President of the Festival in 2007 and served in that role until 2015. During his tenure, he focused on revitalizing and expanding the Festival, enhancing its reputation as one of Canada’s premier celebrations of Ukrainian culture. He introduced the annual Festival Kick-Off Party, which remains a popular tradition today. Working alongside an enthusiastic and dedicated board, David helped bring internationally acclaimed performers from Ukraine, including Ruslana, Mad Heads, and Kozak System. He also helped establish the Sunday Night Grandstand Show, extending the Festival’s celebration of Ukrainian culture and entertainment.
Today, David and Shauna remain devoted volunteers with the Festival, spending countless hours in the Festival’s Selo Heritage Village. Dressed in traditional pioneer attire, they help bring the historic village to life, sharing stories and educating visitors about the experiences, traditions, and resilience of Ukrainian settlers on the Canadian prairies.
Their lifelong dedication has enriched the Ukrainian community and helped ensure that future generations can continue to celebrate and appreciate their rich cultural heritage.
