Based in Toronto, Canada, Kalendar (formally KalynDar) formed in late 2013 to extend the ancient singing traditions and repertoire of rural Ukraine into a contemporary transnational relevant experience. Kalendar has performed throughout Toronto, Ottawa, Oakville, Hamilton and other parts of Ontario; at Ukrainian events like Toronto’s Ukrainian Festival, the Ukrainian Canadian Students Union Conference, the premiere screening of the award-winning Ukrainian film Povodyr (The Guide); as well as non-Ukrainian events like The Toronto Christmas Market, Hamilton’s Winterfest, and the opening of Tarragon Theatre’s production of “Wormwood.” 2016 was an important year for Kalendar for the recording and release of their first EP “Sichen’” as well as being featured in an original Ukrainian-inspired composition by DoVira on their debut EP released in 2017. Our most rewarding work to date occurred in the spring of 2017: with generous support from the Ontario Arts Council, the Shevchenko Foundation, and the Ukrainian Credit Union, Kalendar commissioned and premiered Marichka Marcyk’s original multi-media work, ZEMLYA/EARTH: A Ukrainian Folk Opera, to sold-out audience at Toronto’s St Vladimir Institute.
